Dave Grohl used to be a drummer for nirvana for four years. He wrote many songs while in the band but he never told them because he didn't want to ruin their chemistry. After Kurt Cobain's death in '94 Grohl went to Robert Lang's studio in seattle with producer/friend Barrett Jones. He played every instrument and sang every vocal on the tracks. He ended up going to Capitol Records, had the demo recordings professionally mixed, which resulted in the Foo Fighters self-titled debut album.

He needed a band to support the album and Krist Noroselic was a main candidate for the band but they were concerned that it might portray Foo Fighters as a reincarnation of Nirvana. He got the rest of the band members from Sunny Day Real Estate and Pat Smear who was with Nirvana. Their first major tour was in 1995, opening for Mike Watt.
Their first single, "This is a Call" was released in June 1995 and their next albuum was released the next month. " I'll stick around", "For all the Cows" and " Big Me" were the next 3 released singles.

Before There Is Nothing Left To Lose was released Capitol Records president Gary Gersh was forced out of the label and Foo Fighters left also. They signed on to RCA. They went on David Letterman in Feb. 2000 and performed "Everlong" which was his favorite song and band.
In 2000, the band generated controversy through their public support of Alive & Well, and organization that denies the link between HIV and AIDS. They played a benifit concert and contributed songs to The Other Side of AIDS, a controversial documentary film.

Near the end of 2001, the band recorded their fourth album. For most of their history they chose to stay away from the political realm. However in 2004 upon hearing that George W. Bush's presidential campaign was using " Times Like These", Grohl decided to lend support to John Kerry's campaign. He later cited that his experiences with the campaign was inspiration for the title of their next album.

In Your Honor was released June 14, 2005. On June 17, 2006 they performed their largest non-festival headlining concert to date at London's Hyde Park. The band was supported by Juiette and the Licks, Angels & Airwaves, Queens of the Stone Age, and Motorhead. A surprise performance was by Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen. Nov. 2006 they released their first ever live CD, Skin and Bones.
The latest album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace was released Sept 25, 2007 with the first single "The Pretender". The participated at Live Earth  and Headlined V Festival 2007.
