Early Life
Mayer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Margaret and Richard Mayer. He is the second of three
sons. He listened to pop music as a child and during an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brian he said he played the
clarinet for a while in Middle School but had minor success at it. But after watching Michael J. Fox's guitar performance
in "Back to the Future" he became fascinated with the instrument. At age 13 his father rented one and his neighbor gave him
a Stevie Ray Vaughan cassette, which began his intense love for the blues. When he was 17 his was stricken with cardiac arrhythmia
that sent him to the hospital and reflecting back, Mayer said "That was the moment the songwriter in me was born."

Early Career
Played a guitar for several years before enrolling in the Berklee College of Music in Boston,
Massachusetts at 19. He cut his studies short and moved to Atlanta with friend Clay Cook. They were a two man band called
the LoFi Matsters and played at local venues. They began to experience musical differences. They parted ways and John went
to a solo career. Mayer recorded Inside Wants Out with first single " No Such Thing."
Mayer's reputation began to build, and a March 2000 appearance at South by Southwest Music
Festival brouught him to the attention of "launch" label Aware Records. In early 2001 he released an internet-only album entitled
Room For Squares. By the end of 2002 he had several radio hits like "No Such Thing", "Your Body is a Wonderland", and "Why
Georgia". Heavier Things was the second album released in 2003 to favorable reviews.
He began to collaborate extensively, often working with artists outside his genre. He worked with
Kanye West and Common. Also Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and John Scofield. In spring 2005, Mayer found the John Mayer
Trio with basist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan. In October 2005 they opened for the Rolling Stones.

His latest album called Continuum was released 9-12-06, and was produced by himself and Steve Jordan. The

named one of the "New Guitar Gods" and the cover nicknamed him "Slowhand Jr." a reference to Eric Clapton. Selected by Time
magazine as one of the most influential people of 2007.
In 2002 he bagan the "back to you" fund, a non-profit organization that focuses on fundraising in
the areas of healthcare, education, the arts, and talent development. They raise the money through an auction of John Mayer
